Short answer: yes. As of September 3, 2026, Uber and Wayve have launched autonomous rides for members of the public in London. But calling them “driverless Ubers” is still a little ahead of reality.
The car’s Wayve AI Driver handles the driving, while a trained, TfL-licensed private-hire driver remains onboard to supervise the trip and take over if needed. Uber describes the launch as supervised autonomous rides, not a fully driverless service.
There is no separate robotaxi fare tier to book. Riders requesting UberX, Uber Electric or Uber Comfort may be matched with a Wayve vehicle, and Uber says there is no extra charge beyond the normal upfront fare for the ride type requested.
That makes London’s launch more interesting than a technology demo, but less radical than a car arriving with an empty driver’s seat.

For riders, the experience is intentionally close to ordering a normal Uber:
- Request an UberX, Uber Electric or Uber Comfort trip.
- If a Wayve vehicle is available for the journey, the app may offer it.
- Accept the autonomous ride or switch to a normal non-AV vehicle.
- Check the number plate and vehicle details when it arrives.
- Unlock and start the trip through the Uber experience.
Uber says the in-car display can show the planned route and supports 64 languages.
The important detail is step two: there is no “Wayve Robotaxi” button that guarantees an autonomous car. The vehicle is matched into existing Uber ride categories.
Is it really self-driving if a driver is still sitting there?
This is where the terminology gets messy.
The most useful distinction is between who is performing the driving task and whether a human must still be present as a safety fallback.
The Wayve system can operate the vehicle autonomously during these trips. But the current London service is being run under the UK government’s Automated Vehicle Trialling Code of Practice, which requires a safety driver who is ready, able and willing to resume control.
That is different from the UK’s newer self-driving vehicle piloting scheme, which creates a route for deployments without a safety driver after the necessary vehicle, system and service approvals.
So both of these statements can be true at the same time:
- The car is using autonomous-driving technology to drive the trip.

The table also explains why headlines saying “London gets robotaxis” and headlines saying “there is still a driver” are not necessarily contradicting each other. They are describing different parts of the same rollout.
How to improve the chance of getting one
Uber says London riders can turn on an autonomous-vehicle preference in the app. The current path is:
- Update Uber to the latest version available.
- Open Account.
- Go to Settings.
- Find Ride Preferences.
- Select Autonomous vehicles.
- Turn on the AV preference.
This improves the chance of being matched with a Wayve vehicle; it does not reserve one.
Uber says more than 140,000 Londoners had opted in by the public launch, while the service is beginning with a small number of vehicles. In other words, the first practical bottleneck is likely to be supply, not the number of people curious enough to try one.
Where can it take you?
Uber’s latest launch information says Wayve vehicles can travel anywhere in London apart from airports.
That is broader than an early autonomous service that only follows one fixed shuttle route. However, “anywhere in London” should not be read as “a Wayve vehicle will always be available everywhere.” Matching still depends on whether one of the small number of vehicles is available for the requested trip.
The service is scheduled to operate seven days a week.
Uber’s FAQ also says the vehicles currently accommodate up to four riders, excluding the driver’s seat, and teen accounts are not eligible to be matched with an autonomous vehicle at this stage.
What does it cost?
There is currently no separate robotaxi price.
If a Wayve vehicle is matched to an eligible request, Uber says the rider pays the normal UberX, Uber Electric or Uber Comfort rate shown as an upfront fare in the app.
That is a sensible launch strategy for one reason: it lets riders compare the experience with a normal Uber without having to decide whether autonomous driving is worth a premium.
It also means there is no basis yet for declaring robotaxis “cheaper than Uber drivers” in London. The current product is deliberately priced through the same existing ride categories, and a licensed safety driver is still onboard.
Any future economics could look different once vehicles operate without an onboard driver, fleets grow, maintenance costs become clearer and regulators decide how large-scale autonomous passenger services should operate.
How limited is the launch?
Uber has not published a live vehicle count for every hour of service, but it says the rollout begins with a small number of vehicles.
There is another useful piece of context from the London Assembly. In August, its Transport Committee said TfL had approved a supervised trial involving up to 15 vehicles for one year.
That does not mean 15 cars are necessarily active at all times. It describes the approved trial ceiling, not a guarantee that every licensed vehicle is currently on the road.
This matters because the launch is best understood as public availability at limited scale, rather than a citywide replacement for ordinary ride-hailing.
Why keep a safety driver if the technology is meant to be autonomous?
The current phase solves several problems at once.
It lets the system operate with real passengers
A public ride-hailing trip is different from an internal engineering test. There are pickups, drop-offs, route changes, passengers, cyclists, buses, roadworks, emergency vehicles and all the tiny awkward interactions that make a large city difficult to automate.
Supervision lets Wayve and Uber gather operational experience while maintaining a human fallback.
It fits the current trialling rules
The UK’s Automated Vehicle Trialling Code of Practice requires a safety driver for public-road trials conducted under that framework. The driver must monitor the road and system and be capable of taking control.
It creates a bridge to a different regulatory stage
The UK now also has a separate route for self-driving pilots without a safety driver. The Vehicle Certification Agency says those deployments require assessment of the vehicle, automated-driving system, cybersecurity, software updating, operational management and, where relevant, the passenger service.
That means removing the driver is not simply a product switch that Uber can flip after collecting enough rides. It is also a regulatory milestone.
Is Wayve doing the same thing as Waymo or Tesla?
The companies are pursuing the same broad goal—vehicles that can drive with less or no human involvement—but their technical and deployment strategies differ.
Wayve describes its approach as AV2.0, using an end-to-end AI driving system designed to generalise to new roads and cities without relying on traditional high-definition maps or large sets of hand-coded rules.
For the current London service, the more important consumer distinction is operational rather than architectural:
- Wayve + Uber in London today: public, paid, supervised autonomous rides with a licensed safety driver onboard.
- A fully driverless robotaxi service: the automated system operates without an onboard safety driver under the relevant approvals.
- Driver-assistance systems sold to ordinary car owners: the customer remains responsible under whatever supervision requirements apply to that product.
Those categories are often collapsed into the single phrase “self-driving,” which is why it is worth checking who is actually responsible for the vehicle in a specific service.

1. Is there a safety driver in the vehicle?
If yes, it is supervised even if the automated system is doing most or all of the driving task.
2. Can an ordinary member of the public book or receive the ride?
A public service is meaningfully different from employee-only testing or a closed demonstration.
3. Is the ride paid or free?
Paid service is a stronger signal that the operator is testing a real commercial model, although it still may be a limited pilot.
4. Where can the vehicle actually operate?
Look for the real service area, operating hours and exclusions—not just a city name in the headline.
5. What regulatory framework is it operating under?
The difference between a supervised trial and an approved no-safety-driver deployment can matter more than the branding on the car.
Using that checklist, London’s new service is significant: public, paid and operational across a broad city area—but still supervised.
What should riders expect from the experience?
For now, the novelty is likely to be more visible inside the car than in the booking flow.
There is still a human in the driver’s seat. The Uber app still handles the request. The fare still belongs to familiar Uber categories. A rider can reject the autonomous vehicle before dispatch.
The new part is that Wayve’s system can perform the driving while the human monitors it.
That means the best first question after trying one is probably not “Did this feel like science fiction?” but something more practical:
Did the autonomous system handle an ordinary London trip smoothly enough that the safety driver became boring?
Boring, in this case, would be progress.
What to watch next
Three milestones matter more than flashy demos.
1. Fleet growth
Uber says it will grow the service gradually based on rider demand, readiness and regulation. The first sign of real scale will be when matching a Wayve vehicle stops feeling like winning a small lottery.
2. The move from supervised to no-safety-driver operation
This is the biggest threshold. The UK already has a regulatory path for self-driving pilots without a safety driver, but the current Uber-Wayve service is not operating that way.
A future announcement should be judged by the exact approval and operating conditions, not simply the word “driverless.”
3. Competition
London is becoming a test market for several autonomous-driving groups. Waymo has been preparing a London service, while Baidu and Lyft/Freenow have also been testing in the city.
The important competition will not only be whose car can drive. It will be who can win approvals, operate reliably, scale a fleet, keep waiting times reasonable and make the economics work.
