Market snapshot: Friday, August 14, 2026, early U.S. session. Index levels below are from the opening bell; individual moves use the latest reliably reported prices between roughly 9:11 and 9:32 a.m. ET.

The broad market opened almost flat after a surprisingly weak U.S. retail-sales report. The S&P 500 started about 0.10% higher, the Nasdaq about 0.18% higher, and the Dow essentially unchanged. July retail sales fell 0.6%, versus economists' expectation for a small increase, reinforcing the view that the Federal Reserve may have room to stay patient on rates.

That makes today's strongest moves more useful than a generic index rally. Three areas stand out for different reasons: Reddit on forced index demand, Nubank on a genuine earnings beat, and oil on geopolitical supply risk. None is a blind chase; each has a clear condition that would weaken the momentum case.

1. Reddit: S&P 500 inclusion creates a mechanical demand shock

Reddit (RDDT) jumped more than 11% after S&P Dow Jones Indices said the company will enter the S&P 500, replacing AvalonBay Communities. Reuters reported the shares at $175.69 at 9:32 a.m. ET.

The catalyst is unusually concrete. JPMorgan estimated index funds may need to buy about 16.7 million Reddit shares, close to three times the stock's average daily volume since its IPO. The change becomes effective before the market opens on August 18.

That creates a short, identifiable window in which passive funds and index trackers need exposure. It is different from a vague "AI optimism" story because the buying requirement is tied to an announced benchmark change.

Evidence supporting momentum:

  • more than 11% early-session jump after the announcement;
  • estimated index demand materially larger than normal daily volume;
  • a fixed inclusion date that keeps the catalyst relevant through the next few sessions.

Main risk: index-inclusion trades can fade once forced buying is complete. Reuters also noted that Reddit had been down sharply year to date before this move and that recent U.S. user growth was hurt by choppy search traffic.

Invalidation: if Reddit gives back most of the inclusion gap before the August 18 effective date, the market is signaling that arbitrage sellers and existing holders are overwhelming the passive-fund demand.

2. Nubank: the move is backed by earnings, margins and revenue

Nu Holdings (NU) entered Friday with one of the strongest non-U.S.-megacap earnings reactions. Shares rose about 9.5% after hours Thursday and were still roughly 9.7% higher premarket Friday after the Latin American digital bank reported a quarterly profit above expectations.

The numbers support the move. Nubank reported $1.06 billion of net profit, up 49% year over year on a foreign-exchange-neutral basis, versus a Visible Alpha estimate of about $967 million. Revenue increased 39% to $5.88 billion, also above expectations.

The quality of the quarter matters as much as the headline profit. Risk-adjusted net interest margin improved to 12.4% from 9.9% a year earlier, while early-stage delinquencies eased sequentially to 4.8% from 5.0%. Nubank now serves nearly 139 million customers across Brazil, Mexico and Colombia and is preparing for a U.S. entry.

Evidence supporting momentum:

  • profit and revenue both beat expectations;
  • margin expansion was substantial rather than marginal;
  • early delinquencies improved quarter over quarter;
  • the earnings gap held into Friday premarket rather than disappearing immediately.

Main risk: credit costs remain elevated. Nubank's cost of credit was still up sharply from a year earlier, and early delinquencies remain higher year over year. A fast-growing loan book can make a good quarter look worse quickly if credit quality turns.

Invalidation: if the regular session rejects the earnings gap and the shares close back near the pre-earnings level, the market is telling us that investors care more about future credit risk than the current beat.

3. Oil: relative strength despite weaker U.S. consumer data

Energy is the third momentum pocket, but the signal is in the commodity first, not every oil stock.

At about 9:11 a.m. ET, Reuters had West Texas Intermediate near $81.38 a barrel, up roughly 0.2% on the day, while Brent was near $86.95. More important, Brent was on course for a weekly gain of roughly 3.4% and WTI about 4%.

The driver is geopolitical rather than demand optimism. U.S.-Iran tensions remain elevated, and the possibility of a prolonged naval blockade has kept a supply-risk premium in crude even as Friday's weak retail-sales data raised questions about U.S. demand.

That combination is notable: consumer data weakened, but crude did not surrender its weekly advance. Relative resilience in the face of a demand-negative macro print is the part worth watching.

Evidence supporting momentum:

  • WTI and Brent remain on track for strong weekly gains;
  • geopolitical supply risk has not been resolved;
  • oil held up despite a retail-sales miss that could have pressured cyclical commodities.

Main risk: the fundamental demand backdrop is not uniformly bullish. Recent forecasts point to softer demand growth, and U.S. crude inventories have risen. A ceasefire or easing of the blockade threat could remove the geopolitical premium quickly.

Invalidation: if Brent and WTI lose most of their weekly gains while geopolitical headlines remain unchanged, the market is likely shifting attention back to weak demand and inventories.

Why I am not calling this a broad risk-on day

Friday's tape is too mixed for that label. Retail sales fell 0.6% in July, core retail sales also missed expectations, and the major indexes opened only modestly higher despite the softer-rate narrative.

That is why the useful setups are specific rather than broad:

Momentum pocketCatalystWhat is actually strongMain failure mode
RDDTS&P 500 inclusionForced/passive index demandInclusion gap fades before Aug. 18
NUEarnings beatProfit, revenue and margin expansionCredit concerns overwhelm the beat
Oil / energyIran supply riskWeekly crude-price strengthGeopolitical premium unwinds or demand dominates

This is also intentionally different from the morning technology forecast. Nvidia, Microsoft, TSMC and the rest of the megacap/semiconductor basket may still move on rates and AI expectations, but today's broader-market momentum is easier to explain elsewhere.

Bottom line

Reddit has the strongest event-driven momentum, because the S&P 500 addition creates a near-term mechanical source of demand. Nubank has the cleanest fundamental momentum, with an earnings beat, faster revenue growth and stronger margins behind the gap. Oil has the clearest sector-level resilience, holding a solid weekly advance even after weak U.S. retail data.

The common rule is simple: do not chase the headline alone. The move remains interesting only while the price continues to confirm the catalyst.
