Short answer: probably for basic tracking, but not necessarily for the best nearby-finding experience.

Google’s newly announced Pixel Tag is designed for the Android Find Hub network, so a compatible Android phone can locate the tag on a map and make it ring. The confusing part is precision finding: the direction arrow people associate with AirTag-style tracking depends on Ultra Wideband (UWB), while Google’s newer Bluetooth 6.0 Channel Sounding can provide precise distance on compatible hardware without necessarily providing direction.

That means “works with Android” is not one yes-or-no question. There are really four compatibility layers to check.

Product check — August 16, 2026: The Pixel Tag was announced on August 12. The Verge reports that it goes on sale in the U.S. on November 11, 2026 for $29 each or $99 for four. A current public Google Store UK product page with a verified UK price was not available in this check, so the U.S. price should not be treated as a confirmed UK price.

The important buying lesson is simple: basic Find Hub support does not prove that a phone supports UWB or Bluetooth Channel Sounding.

1. Basic tracking: Find Hub is the foundation

Google’s current Find Hub documentation says tracker tags can be paired and added to Find Hub, and its developer specification describes the Find Hub Network accessory system as compatible with eligible devices running Android 9 or newer in supported countries when the necessary location, Bluetooth and internet requirements are met.

Find Hub is also a crowdsourced network. Google says participating Android devices can detect nearby offline items over Bluetooth and securely send encrypted location reports so the owner can locate them.

For a Pixel Tag buyer, this is the baseline experience: a tag attached to keys, a bag or luggage does not need to be within the owner’s Bluetooth range at every moment. Other participating Android devices can help update the tag’s location.

But Android version alone is not enough to guarantee every feature. Google’s own Find Hub help page notes that some setup and offline-finding capabilities depend on newer Android versions and device support.

Check these settings before buying a tracker

On the Android phone that will manage the tag:

  1. Open Settings → Security → Find Hub and confirm that device finding is enabled.
  2. Open Settings → Google → All services → Find Hub → Find your offline devices.
  3. Check whether the phone is using the network only in busy places or everywhere.
  4. Keep Bluetooth and Location enabled when the tracking use case requires them.
  5. Open the Find Hub app and make sure the phone itself is visible before assuming a future tag will fix a setup problem.

If Find Hub is already unreliable or disabled on the phone, buying a more advanced tracker does not solve that foundation.

2. UWB is what gives the direction arrow

UWB is the important feature for the “walk five metres this way” experience.

Google’s Find Hub accessory specification says UWB precision-finding sessions can provide both distance and direction. Google’s consumer help page similarly says UWB can provide distance and directional guidance when both the tracker and phone support UWB and the feature is enabled.

The Pixel Tag itself includes UWB, according to Google’s August 12 launch information reported by The Verge. The phone is therefore the part buyers need to inspect carefully.

The Verge reports that, for Google phones, Pixel Tag UWB finding works with Pixel Pro models going back to the Pixel 6 Pro, while the new base Pixel 11 still does not include UWB. Google’s Android developer documentation also lists Pixel Pro models from the 6 Pro onward among UWB-capable Google devices.

That creates a slightly counter-intuitive result:

  • a newer phone can support the Pixel Tag but still lack UWB;
  • a several-year-old Pro phone may have the UWB hardware needed for directional finding;
  • the word Pixel by itself does not tell you which experience you will get.

For non-Pixel phones, the same rule applies. Some Samsung, Motorola and other Android models include UWB, while many do not. Check the exact model’s technical specifications rather than assuming that a flagship family name guarantees it.

3. Bluetooth 6.0 Channel Sounding is a second precision layer

Pixel Tag also introduces a newer option: Bluetooth Channel Sounding.

The launch details reported by The Verge say Channel Sounding can provide precise distance on compatible Bluetooth 6.0 hardware, although it does not provide the same directional information as UWB. The report says Pixel 10 and newer Google phones can use Channel Sounding with the tag.

This distinction matters because two phones could both “work with Pixel Tag” while showing different nearby-finding interfaces:

Best case for finding an object nearby. The phone can use distance plus directional guidance to lead toward the tag.

Phone with Bluetooth 6.0 Channel Sounding but no UWB

Still potentially much better than listening for a beep. The phone can estimate distance more precisely, but should not be assumed to offer the UWB direction arrow.

Older compatible Android phone without either

The tag can still be useful through Find Hub’s map, Bluetooth proximity and speaker, but nearby hunting may be less precise.

That is why “Android 9+” and “full Pixel Tag experience” should never be treated as the same specification.

A practical phone-by-phone decision framework

Use this instead of looking only at the Android version.

This framework also prevents an expensive mistake: upgrading a phone purely because a tracker says “precision finding” without checking which radio technology actually enables that feature.

Pixel Tag may be especially interesting for luggage

Tracker value is not limited to finding keys behind a sofa.

In March 2026, Google announced Share item location in Find Hub, allowing a user to create a secure location-sharing link for a compatible tag or network accessory and share it with participating airlines while recovering lost luggage. Google said the rollout started with airline partnerships and that the shared link automatically expires after seven days, unless the owner stops sharing earlier.

That makes the network layer potentially more important than UWB for checked bags. UWB helps once the owner is physically near the bag; Find Hub’s crowdsourced location and airline-sharing workflow are what matter when the luggage is in another terminal or another city.

For luggage, rank the features in this order:

  1. reliable Find Hub participation;
  2. airline/location-sharing support for the route being used;
  3. battery condition before travel;
  4. a secure physical attachment or hidden placement;
  5. UWB or Channel Sounding for the final nearby search.

Pixel Tag has no built-in keyring hole according to the launch report, so buyers planning to attach it externally should include the cost and reliability of a holder in the purchase decision.

What about privacy and unwanted tracking?

Item trackers are useful precisely because other devices can detect them, which also creates stalking and unwanted-tracking risks.

Google’s Find Hub Network accessory specification explicitly requires unwanted-tracking protections and compliance with the Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers (DULT) specification. It also requires compatible locator tags to include a sound maker and an identification mechanism.

That does not make misuse impossible, but it is important context: the network is designed around cross-device detection and anti-tracking requirements rather than simply broadcasting an owner-visible location forever.

For normal use, Google’s Find Hub help also says tracker tags are intended for belongings such as keys, luggage and bikes, and specifically advises against using them to track pets or locate stolen items.

The three-minute compatibility check

Before ordering Pixel Tag in November, answer these five questions.

1. Does Find Hub already work on the phone?

Open the app and verify the phone can be located. If the answer is no, solve this first.

2. Does the exact phone model have UWB?

Search the manufacturer’s technical specification for Ultra Wideband or UWB. Do not infer it from price, model year or the word “Pro” used by another brand.

3. Does it support Bluetooth 6.0 Channel Sounding?

Bluetooth 6.0 alone is a useful clue, but implementation matters. Look for explicit Channel Sounding support in the phone maker’s or Google’s compatibility documentation as the Pixel Tag launch approaches.

4. Which problem is the tag supposed to solve?

For keys at home, nearby precision matters. For luggage, crowdsourced network coverage and location sharing may matter more. For a backpack used daily, battery, speaker volume and physical attachment can be just as important as the radio technology.

5. Is the local price actually confirmed?

As of August 16, the verified launch reporting gives $29 / $99 U.S. pricing and a November 11 sale date. Wait for the official local Google Store page before treating a currency conversion as the real UK, EU or other regional price.

What to watch before November 11

Three details still deserve checking closer to launch.

First, regional availability and pricing. Google’s public UK Store had not exposed a Pixel Tag product page with a price during this check.

Second, a final compatibility matrix. UWB support is reasonably straightforward, but Bluetooth Channel Sounding is newer and buyers should look for explicit model-level confirmation rather than a generic Bluetooth version.

Third, real-world Find Hub performance. A crowdsourced tracker is only as useful as the network that detects it. Launch specifications cannot fully answer how quickly a lost item updates in a quiet suburb, an airport, a train station or a rural area.

Conclusion

Pixel Tag is not just an “Android AirTag” where every Android phone gets the same experience.

The useful way to think about it is as a stack:

Find Hub gives the network. UWB gives distance plus direction. Bluetooth 6.0 Channel Sounding can add precise distance on compatible hardware.

A phone without UWB may still be a perfectly good Pixel Tag companion for luggage or general item tracking. A buyer who specifically wants the directional arrow, however, should verify UWB on the exact phone model before spending anything.

That one compatibility check is more useful than the Android version number on the box.
